Some books I’ve read make me want to draw/sketch scenes or characters from them.
The Judge, Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian
Heart of Darkness
I did these because this image stuck with me. It shows the evil of the colonialism and imperialism and slavery. The thread around the neck links Africa to Europe… has echoes of hangings and lynchings. I know people claim Heart of Darkness is racist – I understand their view, but in my mind it is more of a screed against racism. Scenes such as this demonstrate this I believe. I had the images initially reclined, but liked this better.
